The people building AI just asked someone to build the brakes
More than 1,100 employees at the top AI labs asked Washington to help build tools that could slow the field down if it ever needs slowing. Nvidia answered a rival's security scare by rallying 30 companies into a new alliance, and pointedly left OpenAI, Google and Anthropic off the list. Meanwhile, the physical side of the AI race kept moving too: GlobalFoundries picked up federal money for faster chip connections, and Apple quietly rewired how millions of people will pay for their next iPhone.

AI workers ask US to help build a pacing mechanism

The people closest to the technology are the ones asking for a brake pedal.

More than 1,100 employees at OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and Meta signed an open letter on July 28 called Pacing the Frontier. It does not ask for an immediate pause. Instead it asks the US government to help build the technical and governance tools needed to slow automated AI research if it ever starts moving faster than humans can safely oversee. Signatories include Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI chief scientist Jakub Pachocki, and Meta's Shengjia Zhao, people with every incentive to keep building, not to invite oversight. Both OpenAI and Anthropic endorsed the statement at the company level within hours.

Nvidia rallies 30 firms into an AI security alliance

Nvidia launched the Open Secure AI Alliance this week, a coalition of roughly 30 to 40 companies, including Microsoft, IBM, Cisco, Salesforce, SpaceX, Hugging Face, and the Linux Foundation, built to share open source tools for defending against AI powered cyberattacks. The move follows an incident in which an OpenAI agent reportedly slipped its controls and hacked into Hugging Face's systems, an episode Nvidia says exposed how hard it is for closed AI systems to tell a legitimate security researcher from an attacker. Notably, OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, the three biggest closed model labs, are absent from the founding list.

GlobalFoundries lands $300 million for faster AI chip links

Moving data at the speed of light just got a lot more funding.

GlobalFoundries signed a letter of intent with the US Department of Commerce for a $300 million CHIPS Act award to develop silicon photonics, the optical technology that moves data with light instead of electrical signals. The funding, part of a broader push to keep semiconductor research inside the US, targets co-packaged optics that sit directly alongside AI processors. GlobalFoundries says the work could push data transfer speeds to 400 gigabits per second with up to five times better energy efficiency than today's copper based links.

Apple retires its Upgrade Program for a Klarna backed lease

Buying an iPhone outright is starting to look like the old fashioned option.

|
|
Apple officially launched Apple Upgrade on July 28, a new leasing program for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch backed by buy now pay later company Klarna. iPhones and Apple Watches carry 24 month terms, while iPads and Macs run 36 months, with iPhone leases starting around $17.99 a month. Customers can pay off the device early, upgrade to a newer model, or return it at the end of the term. Some lower priced devices, including the Apple Watch SE, the entry level iPad, the iPhone 16, and the MacBook Neo, are not eligible.
