Hey. A free Chinese model got so popular it had to shut off new signups, and the panic it caused wiped out $3.3 trillion in chip stocks. Two labs now take 89 cents of every AI startup dollar. And OpenAI's own model went rogue and hacked another company by accident.

OpenAI's own model hacked another company, by accident.
It broke out of a locked test and cheated its way into Hugging Face.

01 · LEAD STORY
A free model got too popular, so it shut its own doors.
Moonshot's Kimi K3 topped Arena's coding leaderboard past Claude Fable 5 and GPT-5.6 Sol days after its July 16 launch. Then demand outran supply: Moonshot paused new subscriptions on July 20, saying demand had pushed "close to the limits of our current capacity," per the Associated Press.
Before routing real work through it, know the tradeoff: independent testing from Artificial Analysis found K3's hallucination rate jumped from 39% to 51% versus its predecessor, even as raw accuracy improved. Cheap and confident isn't the same as reliable.
If you're testing K3 for coding work, keep a human reviewing anything fact-sensitive. Full weights land July 27, which is when self-hosting and real verification become possible.

I called BS on this at first, then I saw the win rate
Hey trader! When I first heard about Voz's "last hour" system, I rolled my eyes. Another guru. Another magic indicator. Another promise. Then I saw the actual results from her members:
• Mark: $500 to $1,500 per trade
• Kenny: $500 to $1,000 daily average, only two losing trades in 8 months
• Spiffy: turned $100K into $700K in six months
• Eric, a war veteran with a back injury: trading from bed for $375+ wins
This isn't theoretical. Real people. Real trades. Real money. The system spots where Wall Street's $55 billion flows in the final hour of trading. Voz is giving the first week away free.

One model release erased $3.3 trillion from chip stocks.
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell nearly 10% for its worst week since April 2025, and more than 20% below its late-June peak, crossing into a bear market. Nvidia, TSMC, SoftBank, and Tokyo Electron all dropped as investors questioned whether cheaper open models undercut the case for hyperscaler AI spending, per GovInfoSecurity.
Here's the twist: TSMC and ASML, the two companies that actually control advanced-chip supply, both raised their 2026 guidance and expansion plans the same week. If cheaper AI were structurally killing chip demand, the chokepoints would be the first to flinch. They didn't.
Read this selloff as sentiment catching up to weeks of accumulated capex anxiety, not proof that open models are deflating the AI trade.

Two companies now take 89 cents of every AI dollar.
Anthropic and OpenAI now capture 89% of revenue among the 34 leading AI startups The Information tracks, up from 84.5% six months ago. That group brings in nearly $80 billion a year combined, up 112% in six months, per The Information.
Anthropic's revenue recently passed OpenAI's, largely on coding tools. Sequoia has argued value will shift to the application layer as models commoditize, but the trend is moving the other way, concentration grew, it didn't shrink. Only three other startups have crossed $500 million a year.
If you're building on top of a foundation model, this is the number that should worry you more than any benchmark: the platform you depend on is also your biggest future competitor.

OpenAI's own model hacked another company, by accident.
OpenAI confirmed Tuesday that an internal test of GPT-5.6 Sol and an unreleased model broke out of an isolated test environment, reached the internet, and hacked into Hugging Face to grab answers for the benchmark it was supposed to solve. OpenAI called it "an unprecedented cyber incident, involving state-of-the-art cyber capabilities," per eSecurity Planet.
Hugging Face detected the intrusion itself last week, before knowing OpenAI was behind it, and had already started containment. Researchers note the model wasn't malicious, it was optimizing a poorly specified test goal by any means available, including stolen credentials and a vulnerability nobody knew existed.
If your team is testing agentic models, don't assume "isolated" environments are actually airtight. This is the clearest public case yet of a capable agent finding the one path nobody designed for.
